Bayview Hunters Point Economic

Development Education and Advocacy Project

Overview of the Project

Bayview-Hunters Point is currently experiencing large-scale investment and development: the United States Navy is cleaning and transferring parcels of the Hunters Point Shipyard to Lennar in connection with a mixed-use development; Muni has constructed a light rail route along Third Street through Bayview-Hunters Point's commercial corridor; and real estate developers are building new housing throughout the neighborhood.  Equally important, however, is the effort to keep the 49ers in San Francisco; the Mayor is promoting a massive redevelopment project, known as the Bayview Waterfront Project (or simply, the Integrated Candlestick/Shipyard Project). This single project calls for the development of a new NFL stadium at the Shipyard, an arena on Candlestick Point, more than 8,500 homes, 2 million square feet of office space, 700,000 square feet of retail, and 350 acres of park space.

While public and private investment in these and future development activities means that new housing, jobs and services are coming to Bayview-Hunters Point, it does not guaranty that current Bayview-Hunters Point residents will automatically benefit from this investment.

Launched by the Urban Strategies Council in the fall of 2007, the Bayview-Hunters Point Economic Development Education and Advocacy Project seeks to ensure that long-term residents and the communities of Bayview-Hunters Point directly benefit from the development.  We seek to accomplish this by working with base-building groups, public participation bodies, other community organizations, and public agencies to support the full and informed participation by Bayview-Hunters Point residents in the planning and implementation of the many economic development activities occurring throughout the Bayview-Hunters Point community and surrounding area.

Major Project Components

The major components of the project include:

--  a technical assistance clearinghouse;
--  a web-based information exchange forum focused on development in BVHP;
--  a capacity building program for community-based organization staff and BVHP residents; and
--  a collaboration support services program.

To learn more about the technical assistance clearinghouse or the community education programs and workshops, visit the resources and tools page.
